This walk is an easy beginner-friendly walk along a mildly undulating series of ridges, saddles and hills that ends with a spectacular view over the Grose River way below, then on the way back you can deviate down to the popular Girraween Camp Cave that is located down next to a crystal clear creek.
This walk starts at the location marked off Victoria Falls Track and is easily accessible by any two wheel drive, park on the side of the road in one of the many water run-offs and the track starts on the left of one such run-off. The track is VERY WELL defined and very easy to follow, and at a moderate pace with stops for photos, will take on average about 70-80 minutes from the carpark to the cliff top views at the end of Ikara Head.
In Spring, the wild flowers are in full bloom and it will be a sea of colour in places making it even more special. There really are no real hills to worry about with just a single short "climb" up the side of a small hill, it really is an easy walk.
Keep in mind, these are very high, unfenced cliffs and if you do take small children, keep them well back from the edge, it really is a long way down.
From the end point, you get some stunning views down over the Grose River, Surveyors Creek, Jungaburra Brook and Koombanda Brook, you can even see the old access road to the old Colliery hidden under the tree canopy of Koombanda Brook. Look to your right and you will be getting some pretty amazing views down the valley and the cliffs on the other side.
On the way back, you can take the short deviation into the gully on your left to Girraween Camp Cave, only takes a few minutes to walk/scramble down from the main track, though this track is a little less defined, but still easy to follow. When we walked this, there was a cairn of stacked rocks marking the turn off point, you should have a very noticeable rocky buttress of rocks on your right. This track is a little steep and slippery in places, but should be manageable by most people.
Girraween Cave is a popular camp cave / overhang, big enough for a couple of tents and there are two fire places, one at each end. You are 30 feet from a crystal clear flowing creek that is quite narrow, but cool and quite deep in places, great for a cooling dip in summer.
